Hand-carved relief blocks and repeat pattern development on muslin. The design was inspired by a trip to Portugal with the geometric logic of azulejo tilework seen throughout Lisbon and Porto.

Fiber: Muslin · Block medium: Linoleum · Inspiration: Azulejo tile, Portugal

Reference — Portugal

The pattern draws from azulejo tilework, the hand-painted tin-glazed ceramic tiles found across Portugal. Their geometry — interlocking forms, bilateral symmetry, and tight repeat logic — translated directly into the block carving process.

Process

The linoleum block was carved by hand, working from the reference sketches. Carving determines the negative space — what you remove is what will hold the ink. The block is inked and pressed in sequence to build a repeating motif across the cloth.
